Everyone loves the eighties! Even the kids of today who weren’t even born then but suck up it’s cultural influences like it’s going out of fashion. Which it did, but came back, then went out of fashion again, and… oh, it’s just too complicated. A couple of cats who do still rep for the eighties (and were old enough to actually see it first time round) are Neon Neon, a creative super-duo consisting of Bryan Hollon and Gruff Rhys. Hollon’s solo moniker is Boom Bip, a veritable king of the dusty beats on the underground scene, who has been making a move towards focusing on the electronic end of the spectrum in more recent times. Gruff Rhys is most notably known as the lead singer of the Super Furry Animals, but also keeps himself busy with solo work as seen with this year’s Candylion.

The concept behind Neon Neon is to champion that most eighties of vehicles, the DeLorean. If you’ve seen either of the Back To The Future movies (part III just doesn’t count), you’ll know of it’s place in the hearts and minds of folks who were kids back then. But - did you also know that automobile-producing high flyer John Delorean ‘allegedly’ dated Raquel Welch? Or that Delorean was caught up in an FBI entrapment scandal which he escaped without charge? There’s plenty more to the DeLorean story than just a flux capacitor and a wide-eyed scientist, and this is where Neon Neon step in.

With two wonderfully designed 12-inch picture discs under their belt this year (Trick For Treat and Raquel), 2008 will see the release of Neon Neon’s longplayer, focusing on the doomed automobile and it’s related tales from a bygone era. To cover us until then, Boom Bip offers up Stainless Style Influences, a 35 minute mix which takes in some tracks which have clearly inspired the direction of the two artists, as well as a few Neon Neon numbers (non 12-inch exclusives) for good measure. Best played loud in the Twin Pines Mall parking lot.
