Over the past half a decade or so, the Ghost Box label has quietly been carving a path into the strangest of musical territory. Reminiscent of the sounds found in hoary educational school films, or creepy eighties BBC shows like Chocky, much of the label’s output readily falls into the self-imposed genre known as ‘Hauntology’. Throw in some carefully inspired artwork by prominent graphic designer (and label founder) Julian House, and the authentic sense of nostalgia is complete. The Mind Bridge is a culmination of the twisted minds who frequent the GB roster, such as The Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly, The Focus Group and so on. Techno was, is and will forever be associated with the future. From the space-age pieces of music-making kit involved that are synonymous with the genre, to the forward-thinking sounds found in all manner of hard to find albums and expensive import 12 inches, techno is always one step ahead of the rest of the pack. Conversely, the idea for this mix has been idling around in the past for some time. Bringing to the fore some classic tracks from many moons ago, Technode is a minor tribute to a major associate - namely one Dave Winter. A true futurist, his lust for anything techno (and beyond) was effortlessly inspiring; always first with the knowledge on a new label or must-listen EP, generously handing over tapes of strange and exciting music, a huge debt is owed to his guiding light in the darker reaches of the electronic end of the music spectrum… which is where you’re headed with Technode.

Seedy beats and some mighty rude bass are the order of the day for Last Man Standing. This set comes right out of the sub-basement level of the club, where only the brave dare enter (and foolhardy accidentally walk into). The tracklist should tell you all you need to know, but an honourable mention goes to King Cannibal who applies devastating frequencies at the best of times, but really switches up through the gears with the Qemists remix. This week brought the news that longtime UK graphic design studio The Designers Republic has closed for business. With over 20 years in the business across various media, tDR was a beacon of originality, arguably at their peak during the mid to late nineties. At the time the studio could do no wrong, producing a seemingly endless run of fantastical sleeve art, predominantly for Warp Records. This mix is a tribute to an era when the names Warp and The Designers Republic were so intrinsically linked, they may as well have been the same company, and all this from Sheffield in the North of England (where it’s always sunny!). All tracks are taken from Warp releases (bar one) where the artwork was created by tDR. Also, all are in chronological order of release, starting way back in 1990 right up to 2008. A creepy insect roaming along the wall or a twisted horror movie perhaps, but few would say that music gives them the scares. Well to those we say… it’s time for music to scare you! This arrangement was forged in the twisted fires for the annual Ninja Tune forum swap in the year you mortals call 2008, overseen this time round in fine form by Soleboy. Consisting of a distribution method which confounds the modern age of digital mp3 devilry, mixed or compiled CDs are swapped between willing participants, resulting in a bounty of sounds to last you through the festering winter months.

Found herein are ungodly sounds, soaked in blood and condemned to hell (and your stereo, of course). Listen well, and sleep tight - for demons come for you in the night…

This one has been kicking around the hard drives for a fair old while, so it’s about time it saw a bit of digital distribution. An experiment in ‘making things fit’, Rustcoozi brings together Glasgow wunderkind Rustie and Berlin-based Jahcoozi (Oren Gerlitz, Robert Koch, Sasha Perera) for some heavy ass-shakin’ dancefloor action. Taken from Rustie’s 2007 debut 12″ Jagz The Smack for Stuff Records, Clipper is a belter of a tune in it’s own right, helping to propel Rustie into the limelight in which he stayed put throughout 2008 with a handful of 12″s as well as some high profile remix duties for the likes of Modeselektor, Pivot and Various Production.

Jahcoozi have been knocking around a few years longer than Rustie, releasing two long players in the form of Pure Breed Mongrel (2005) and Blitz ‘N’ Ass (2007). BLN is the opener for the latter album, doing a great job of advertising the virtues of Berlin to all those potential tourists out there. Put ‘em together and you get the tune behind that mp3 link below. Unleash it on to your nearest dancefloor and tell ‘em BosBos sent ya. Promises are there to be broken, but 2009 might see more of this sort of thing dropping on the BB.net. It takes a procastination of millions to hold us back…

Japanese group BORIS are as eclectic as they come. Listen to any one of the albums from their extensive back catalogue and you’ll often find it quite different to the last; drone, metal, psychedelic, noise, sludge… something for everyone, you might say. One area of sound that BORIS really do excel at is the more calm, reflective end of the musical spectrum. Wistful guitar solos and distant drums prove that BORIS is more than just another noise band. These ambient moments often get lost on rarer earlier releases which are yet to be sampled by those new to the group, possibly enjoying Smile, the latest longplayer by Atsuo, Takeshi and Wata. AMBIENCE is presented here for your listening enjoyment, designed to fill in the gaps of the lighter yet no less powerful sound of BORIS. All audio and artwork manipulated by BosBos.
