Seeing how a return to the Seasonal Sounds Series was long overdue, it felt fitting to cram some seriously hot tunes into one and a half hour’s worth of digitally encoded bits. Bosbos.net is always happy to take you cross-continent on the musical map (business class or higher, of course), so expect stop overs in Paris, LA, Tokyo, Seoul and more. Depending on where you are, summer may have come and gone (or still be clinging on!) – either way, you can keep the vibes alive with Seasonal Sounds Series #2.

BosBos – Sick Trix (An Introduction To Oneohtrix Point Never)

MP3, Music May 17th, 2010

BosBos - Sick Trix
Oneohtrix Point Never is the sublime moniker of one Daniel Lopatin, a man who has been steadily perfecting his unique brand of electronic ambience over the past couple of years. His is a sound that delves deep into a particularly flavoursome brand of eighties-styled synthesis, and takes influence from such out-there sources as primitive CGI-strewn promotional videos for corporations long since forgotten/now defunct. Some might immediately consider OPN to be another Boards of Canada clone, but that would be a churlish and frankly lazy comparison. OPN steers away from the beats to work for the most part entirely using synthesizers. Think more Selected Ambient Works II by that loveable rogue Aphex Twin than Music Has The Right To Children. What OPN does share with BOC is that intangible vibe of a nostalgia you either half remember, or never realised was there at all. If you are of a certain age, a lot of OPN’s sounds will make perfect sense to you.

OPN’s most comprehensive release to date, Rifts, was released towards the end of 2009 compiling tracks from previous releases of a hard-to-find nature (track down the 2xCD or buy it digitally from the usual online haunts, it’s definitely worth some of your hard-earned money). Next month sees the release of longplayer Returnal on Peter Rehberg‘s Editions Mego label, and along with some sleeve art designed by Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) fame, the future is looking very bright indeed for Oneohtrix Point Never. In that spirit, Sick Trix is a compiled mix of OPN tracks from past works. If drifting ambient soundscapes sound like your kind of thing, be sure to check it out – and keep an ear to the ground for a couple of the stranger sampled delights buried within which evoke the ‘screw music’ sound, popularised by DJ Screw (RIP) of the Screwed Up Click.

Oneohtrix Point Never is touring internationally this summer – visit the Point Never site for dates/further info.

Autechre – Webcast (02/03/2010)

MP3, Music March 4th, 2010

Autechre - Webcast
Autechre are due to release Oversteps this month, their latest album since 2008′s Quaristice. If you’ve yet to catch the recently released digital version, or are eagerly awaiting the physical release on CD or vinyl, your ears might be crying out for something good to listen to. Not to worry – Autechre have you got you covered. On the 2nd March 2010, the masters of electronic sound unleashed a 12 hour-long webcast filled with music from almost every genre that you’d care to name. Rather than attempt to describe this half-day musical journey in any kind of meaningful way, it’s far simpler for you to just grab the files and get listening.

*Due to issues with various filesharing services, the webcast is now available via torrent at Demonoid*

Another year, another Ninja Tune forum swap. Compiled for the 2009 Xmas Swap (hosted in fine style by the venerable Spunktrumpet), And So To Bed… keeps it low and lazy with sounds found at the blurred edge of dub & techno. If you enjoyed 2008′s NiteDrive, then this one will be right up your street.

Strictly Kev – Kev’s Kraftwerk Kover Kollection 1-6

MP3, Music, Solid Steel November 22nd, 2009

Kev's Kraftwerk Kover Kollection
Kraftwerk should require no introduction. You’ve heard either their music or influence, knowingly or unknowingly at some time or another. Their reach has been so emphatically placed into the mindset of so many modern artists, it’s difficult to know where to begin when considering songs influenced by the German visionaries of the future, or just the many cover versions of such classics as ‘Computer Love’, ‘The Man Machine’ or ‘Autobahn’. Thankfully, that’s where Strictly Kev (aka DJ Food) comes in.

A true fan of all things Kraftwerk, Strictly Kev has built a large collection of cover versions over the years which walk a fine line between sublime homage and downright absurdity. Rock, chiptune, classical and many more styles beyond feature in Kev’s Kraftwerk Kover Kollection. Volumes 1-4 have been available from bosbos.net for some time, but with Kev unleashing volume 6 onto an unsuspecting listening public, it was a good time to round them all up into one neat package for your convenience. Start by downloading the brilliant high-res cover artwork (by Kev, of course) and tracklists here, then fill your boots with the krafty mix werk below…

BosBos – The Mµ Wave

BosBos, MP3, Music September 14th, 2009

BosBos
As a label, Planet Mu has been around long enough to see whole genres of music come and go, but thanks to some choice signings courtesy of the main mu man Mike Paradinas, it’s always carved a solid path through the mire of electronic music. Famed for past releases by the likes of Jega, Venetian Snares and µ-Ziq (Paradinas himself), the focus in more recent times has been placed on the dubstep/grime crossover that has burgeoned in sweaty clubs across the land. With the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs at the selective helm for her third compilation for Mu (Wild Angels, out now), it can only be onwards and upwards for the label as it continues to set the standard for others to follow.

The Mµ Wave compiles some hefty tunes from Planet Mu’s output over 2009, giving a chance for newer artists to show off their wares next to the more established likes of Boxcutter, who was once the new boy but now commands critical acclaim after a pile of excellent longplayers and EPs for Mu. What does 2010 hold for Planet Mu? Who knows (other than Mike P)… but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be pretty interesting finding out.

BosBos – The Alt River

BosBos, MP3, Music September 3rd, 2009

BosBos
The Alt River is more compilation than mix – no fancy turntable tricks here – but what matters (what should always matter) are the tunes. The outer sounds to be found come courtesy of classic bands like Joy Division, Public Image Limited and The Pop Group, as well as more modern types like !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and Pivot. All weave their magic to make for an enjoyable listening experience that showcases some truly great alternative music from the last few decades or so. Oh, and if you know the inspiration for the sleeve art above, give yourself a pat on the back for being so clever… then shuffle off in your slippers for being so old!

BosBos – UR (Underground Resistance)

BosBos, MP3, Music August 22nd, 2009

BosBos
Founded in 1989 by one Michael Anthony Banks (AKA Mad Mike), Underground Resistance is a Detroit-based label that has always been driven by a thoroughly independent ethos. It’s militant message is just as strong as the music pressed to vinyl – over the years it has adapted from soulful electronic beginnings to some seriously caustic techno of the highest order. This mix isn’t particularly populated by the latter UR sound (nothing harsh enough to bring on nosebleeds, for example) but the one thing it does contain a lot of is soul. It should be pointed out that certain tracks are taken from the Red Planet imprint, a child of the UR parentage, but all sounds tread a similar path of greatness. Remember, UR created tomorrow and live in your imagination – they will never die.

Baiyon – Moebius Mix

MP3, Music May 16th, 2009

Baiyon
Baiyon is one Tomohisa Kuramitsu, an experimental artist in both the musical and graphical sense. Combining his talents into various artworks and musical releases over time has driven him to create his most well known work, namely 2008′s Pixeljunk Eden, a videogame which strongly incorporates the union between audio and visual to produce a fantastic sensory gameplay experience.
Pixeljunk Eden
Le Monde Moebiusien (The Moebiusian World) is an exhibition currently being held at the International Manga Museum in Kyoto, Japan. Celebrating the works of renowned French graphical artist Moebius, the exhibition also allows for the inclusion of representatives of Japanese manga and animation to discuss his influence. Joining together for a live event, Baiyon soundtracked Moebius as he painted. Unfortunately the footage of this event could not be sourced – so you’ll have to close your eyes and imagine Moebius getting busy with the brushes – but you can at least hear what Baiyon had to offer musically, which amounts to some hefty techno and Brazillian beats galore.

BosBos – The Mind Bridge (A Ghost Box Tribute)

BosBos, MP3, Music May 9th, 2009

BosBos - The Mind Bridge
Over the past half a decade or so, the Ghost Box label has quietly been carving a path into the strangest of musical territory. Reminiscent of the sounds found in hoary educational school films, or creepy eighties BBC shows like Chocky, much of the label’s output readily falls into the self-imposed genre known as ‘Hauntology’. Throw in some carefully inspired artwork by prominent graphic designer (and label founder) Julian House, and the authentic sense of nostalgia is complete. The Mind Bridge is a culmination of the twisted minds who frequent the GB roster, such as The Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly, The Focus Group and so on. Step into the other world of Ghost Box – and you may never return quite the same again.
