DJ Krush coming live & direct

MP3, Music, News May 22nd, 2007

DJ Krush
With a career spanning twenty years, it’s fair to say that DJ Krush knows his stuff when it comes to hip hop. Since forming ‘Krush Posse’ back in 1987, Krush (real name Hideaki Ishi) has consistently turned out many a diverse album; from his soulful debut Krush (1994), his many releases for the Mo’ Wax imprint, right up to the more recent dark, brooding soundscapes of Jaku (2004) which really showcases how far his sound has progressed over the years. His most recent work, Suimou Tsunenimasu (2007) is a 3xDVD set compiling archive tour footage, documentaries and promo videos.

No doubt the camcorders will be running again soon, as Krush makes a handful of appearances inDJ Krush - DOP Flyer Europe over the coming months. One of those dates which gains a special mention has to be this Friday, May 25th, when Krush will touch down at Clockwork in Bristol, UK thanks to our friends, the Detectives Of Perspective crew. DOP managed to score an appearance by DJ Kentaro earlier this year, so Krush will be continuing the stealthy Japanese invasion in ‘07. Other acts on the same bill include Ninja Tune’s Hexstatic, and Peter Parker of Fingathing fame. His appearances are rare in the west, so if you are from that part of the world, don’t say you haven’t been warned - it’s a show you won’t want to miss.

If you can’t make the dates, here’s a tasty mix recorded at Barcelona’s Sonar festival in 2002, around about the time Krush’s sixth studio album Shinsou “The Message At The Depth” was released. No tracklist, but if you know your music, you’ll certainly recognise a few tracks getting the Krush treatment. If not, just sit back and enjoy those head-nod beats. Download link after the jump. Björk interview at Pitchfork

Music, News March 13th, 2007

björk“All I wanted to do for this album was just to have fun and do something that was full-bodied and really up.” Pitchfork have got the inside line on Björk’s new album Volta - well, it helps when a staffer just happens to be chummy with Matthew Barney, who happens to be Björk’s partner. According to Pitchfork, this is the first in a series of snippets taken from the lengthy interview session. Legitimate album tease or drip-feed journalism? You decide… [Björk answers two questions for now]

Transformers: footwear in disguise

News March 6th, 2007

nike transformersWith the all-new Transformers movie just under six months away, the tie-in products are slowly starting to sneak their way from design board to prototype status to nerdy Internet sites, this one being no exception. One such product happens to be Nike’s take on the kids cartoon show that can do no wrong, a set of trainers that will have many a ’sneaker obsessive’ frothing at the mouth with credit card in hand.

I find the colour-way on this design a bit of a mess. Autobot logo aside (why no Decepticon logo?), the colours used don’t really jump out and say ‘Transformers’ to me. An alternative could be to run with a set of different colourways for each of the key characters in the upcoming movie. Bumblebee seems to be getting a lot of the preview shot action on film sites, a bright orange-decked pair of Nikes is an opportunity that really shouldn’t be missed. Plenty of time for Nike to take my constructive criticism on board - the pair shown in the photos have no release date or even confirmation that they will go on sale to the general public. Oh well, back to collecting the bankruptable Jordans instead. [found on footurama]

Steinski going all kinds of live

Music, News March 4th, 2007

steinskiSteve Stein(ski) has been around the block for some time, but has kept his head down more often than not. If you don’t know his story by now, well.. I’m sorry, but you can’t call yourself hip hop. Take off the shelltoes, lose the chains, and go home and tell your mother that you’ve ‘grown out of it’. The good news is that Steve has finally found his way on to the Internet of all things. Steinski.com has gone live, and in it’s infant state contains Steve’s general musings on the big wide world, a hook-up for a couple of mixes by the man himself, an in-depth schooling in the ‘Ralphie’s Bop City’ project (fantastic stuff - totally recommended) and the best method for instant Bootsy Collins look-a-like status.

In other news, Steve will be showing up in various spots worldwide in the next few months to deliver some no-doubt choice sounds and words of wisdom. Continuing his work with the Red Bull Music Academy he will be lecturing in both Germany (city unconfirmed) and Porto, Portgual (go visit sometime - it’s a beautiful city) in March, then moving on to the UK for two dates over the Easter weekend. Friday 6th April seessteinski bristol the Detectives Of Perspective on hosting duties at Timbuk2 in Bristol for the always great Solid Steel club night, and DJ Food will be there to make for some quality Foodski action (not forgetting DK and the DoP residents of course). The following night (7th) will see the Solid Steelski action roll on to London, where everyone will surely be encouraged to get up off their feet and wave their hands in the air like they just don’t care. That, or be told to stop looking at the laptop screens..

New Björk album ‘Volta’ in May

Music, News March 4th, 2007

BjorkIt’s been some time since we’ve heard from Björk, Her last notable original output being the soundtrack to 2005’s Drawing Restraint 9, an abstract film written and directed by her boyfriend Matthew Barney. Following on from 2004’s Medúlla, Her sixth studio album Volta is due for release on May 7th 2007. The album’s ten new tracks feature appearances from, among others: Timbaland, Antony Hegarty (Antony and the Johnsons) and Mark Bell (LFO), not forgetting the obligatory ten-piece female brass section, of course.

Also, for the first time in four years, Björk will be back on tour to promote her new album. Confirmed dates so far are all for festivals, including Glastonbury (UK) and Coachella (USA), with future dates due to be announced in the coming weeks. Having never seen Björk live, I will happily offer some sacrificial animal to higher powers if she can show up at Sonar Festival in Barcelona this year, where I will also be in attendance. She has performed there in the past, and the dates (14th/15th/16th June) are still available on her schedule if her website is to be believed. Perhaps Mark Bell can have a word in her shell-like for me… fingers crossed!

We. Are. Back.

kanpai! What? You’re still here? Checking in to see if things are suddenly going to spring back into life? Well lucky old you - they have! If you caught the turbulent tail-end of the former glory days of bosbos.net, you’ll know that the battle between sharing quality musical content and the bandwidth demons was one that man alone cannot win. Lessons have been learnt. Changes have been made. Most importantly, the site remains and will be firing on all cylinders from here on in.

Hopefully you can all see the new design as intended, nothing like a spruce-up to begin anew. In future, bosbos.net will not only cater to your listening pleasure, but also provide plenty of news and fun stuff from the cultural stew that is human existence. Cool films, silly trainer styles, artists you really should be checking out, it will all be here. This is where you come in - if you hear of anything worthy of note that you think should be here, then get in touch. Many ears to the ground is worth two in the bush.. errr, you get the idea! Keep checking in, because there’s more to the Internet than myspace. There are less angst-ridden teenagers posting up videos of themselves here (probably).
